How Solar Panels Work

Explaining The Solar Energy Process

Solar panels in Regina work by turning the sun into electricity, which may seem simple when put like this, but it’s not. The technicalities of solar panels in Regina can be intimidating and confusing. One of our most frequently asked questions is, “how do solar panels work.” In this article, Kelln Solar will explain the multi-step solar panel process.

Generating Electricity

It’s obvious that solar panels in Regina generate electricity from the sun, it’s why we put them on our homes. However, what is a semi-secret is just how they do that. First of all, solar panels have what is called a silicon photovoltaic solar cell. The solar cell is responsible for absorbing the sun’s energy. Then, as the sun’s energy reacts with the photovoltaic cell, elections begin to move. The electrons then create a flow of electricity. Wires then catch and move this direct current- or DC- into a solar inverter. Next, the solar inverter converts the DC into alternating current- or AC- electricity.

How is The Electricity Used in My Home?

Now that you understand how the sun’s rays are turned into energy, we’ll address how this electricity is used in your home. To start with, we’re going to go back to the solar inverter. If you remember, the solar inverter changes DC energy into AC energy. The solar converter does this because DC energy cannot be used for general appliances, but AC energy can. From this, the solar converter disperses electricity to the rest of your home. However, what if you produce more power than you need? Well, the solar converter thought of that too and will send electricity back to the grid. Better yet, most governments will provide credits for this that you can use on a future bill.

           We are lucky enough to live in a time that we have the technology to be able to harvest the suns energy. If you’re thinking about doing solar in Saskatchewan, the time is now to ensure you get 20% of that system paid for by SaskPower!

To qualify for the refund, you (with our help!) need to have submitted your interconnection study for NetMetering to SaskPower prior to November 30, 2018. We then have a year to get your system installed, connected to the grid and apply for your rebate (which is a lot of time!)

What is the Interconnection Study?

SaskPower takes a look at your address, and, the transmission and distribution equipment in the area to ensure the grid can handle the solar flowing back into the grid. 99% of the time, the answer is yes.  We’ve yet to come across the 1% when they say no.

What happens when they say yes?

We install your system! It takes about 4-5 weeks for the study to be completed and approval to be granted for net metering. During that time, we are busy ensuring we have all the components of your system in stock, and we have a work plan to complete the job safely and on-time.

What happens next?

Once your array is installed and connected to the grid, we arrange for an inspection, as all our work must be done to code. Once we pass inspection, the system can be turned on and you can being offsetting your usage immediately.

The Final Step

SaskPower meter services will install a bi-directional meter, so they can track the power going back into the grid. During the day, the meter turns backward as you feed the grid, and in the evening it will go forward, as you draw from the grid – this is net-metering. Our goal is to have that meter as close to zero at the end of the year as possible.

We just got back from exhibiting at the Farm Progress Show, and aside from answering questions about our livestock watering products, one of the most frequent questions we got was;

“Do you guys do residential (aka. Grid-Tie) solar projects?”

The answer is yes, we do them well, and we have been doing them for a long time, before solar was cool (or even affordable!). We do them in the city, in a town, on your farm, on the ground, on the roof, on a tracker, or on your business, they’re kinda like green eggs and ham to us, we’ll do them anywhere, but we do have some questions before we start.

Let’s examine the 3 constraints of a solar project, and then we can design the system that fits within those constraints;

  1. Consumption – The SaskPower NetMetering program allows you to offset your consumption with the power that your solar array produces, however, you are not provided any compensation if you produce more than you consume. For example, if you consume 7,200 kwh/year from the grid, we wouldn’t put a 10kw array on your home, a 10kw array would produce 13,000 kwh, and you’d be subsidizing SaskPower. However, a 5kw system produces about 7,200 kwh year, costs less and requires less space. For farms, and commercial customers consumption is not often a design constraint.
  2. Available Space – A solar module is either 18 sq. feet (60 cell), or 22 sq. feet (72 cell panel), and a south facing exposure will maximize the production of the module. We can, and will use other exposures to help offset your bill, but, we start by filing the southern exposure. If that’s enough to offset your consumption (from above) there’s no need to look at SW, E, or W exposures. This is the most common constraint for a roof mount installation in an urban setting.
  3. Budget – Solar isn’t cheap, it usually starts at about $12,000, and, the Net Metering rebate (20%) is available on projects up to $100,000. Budget is a constraint of farm, rural, commercial and residential customers. Whether it’s a dollar limit, a rate of return target, or payback period, we will design a project that meets your financial needs.

Once again, yes, we’re more than just a livestock watering company, we’ve been doing solar a long time, we have a process to design your project, install your project, monitor your project, and we’re just a short drive away to inspect and maintain your array once it’s connected to the grid.

The current SaskPower Net Metering rebate of 20% expires in November 2018, we’re expecting a new program announcement soon, but don’t know any details, if you’re thinking about Solar for your home, farm or business now is the time.
